A Repair Kit for Grading
15 Fixes for Broken Grades
By: Ken O'Connor
As we wind down in the school year, it is a time for educators to look at the grades being entered onto the report cards and wonder how we got to this point. When were students reduced to a single number while many educators question the validity of those numbers. Do they truly show growth and learning? Are the numbers a clear reflection of the important work in the classroom?
For many of us, we answer no to these questions. This book will allow us to look at holistically at the grading done in our classrooms and how that grading reflects "four overaching criteria for, or keys to, success: they must be consistent, accurate, and meaningful, and must support learning" (p. 4).
So, let us begin the journey through the 15 fixes for broken grades.
